I Can Taste my Childhood draws on a personal landscape shaped by memory and familiarity. A tribute to the peach tree from the artist’s early life, it captures a sense of place and time rather than just the fruit itself.
In Malta, the peach tree (is-sigra tal-hawh) has been cultivated for generations, particularly in fertile valleys and private domestic gardens. It is a nostalgic symbol of the Maltese summer, representing the sweetness of the harvest and the continuity of family life. This work explores the enduring presence of the tree as it remains a sensory anchor and a definition of the perfect peach.

Sandstorm forms part of artist Jo Dounis’ body of fluid art paintings. The technique allows her to create an organic, flowing effect, virtually devoid of the brushstrokes which would give away the presence of the artist. Fluid art enables the artist to depict natural elements such as water, wind and skies with a convincing and evocative aesthetic, giving the viewer a more direct connection with the subject-matter.

We’ll Walk to the Tower at Dusk fills the frame with the prickly pear, known locally as il-bajtra tax-xewk. In this composition, form and shadow are carefully balanced, captured in the heavy, direct light of midday. The title alludes to countless walks to this location dear to the artist's heart, the coolness of the evening bearing witness to years of joy and pain, now preserved in one single frame.
In the Maltese landscape, prickly pear plants often line the narrow paths leading to coastal towers. They act as silent markers of time and passage, thriving in rocky soil regardless of the season. Here, the cactus represents an enduring companion standing watch over the landscape as day turns to dusk.

Green Giant is a vibrant semi abstract celebration of the iconic prickly pear cactus. Moving beyond traditional botanical art, the piece uses bold acrylic contrasts and rhythmic geometry to highlight the sculptural power of the plant within the Maltese landscape.
The prickly pear (il-bajtra tax-xewk) is an intrinsic part of Malta's rural identity and associated with traditional Maltese stone walls. A symbol of endurance, it is prized for its medicinal properties and its ability to thrive in the harshest sun. A fire with its dancing flames is difficult to look away from. Flames of Passion is inspired by fire and the colour red, and though abstract in nature, the artist’s intention is to draw the viewer into the flames at different stages - from roaring to dying embers - of a fire on a literal level and of passion on a figurative level.

The style of painting used in Valley represents a departure from the artist’s usual aesthetic. This piece is one of the her early attempts at abstracting a landscape, primarily with the use of colour and texture. Valley was created in 2016 when the artist first started to paint regularly, and during a period when she developed a keen interest in a more abstract depiction of her subjects.

This painting embodies the exact moment the Negroni drink comes to life, through the process of being poured and mixed. The three equal parts of Negroni are represented by the colours – red (Campari), warm brown (Vermouth Rosso) and transparent white (Gin) in a fervent yet harmonious twist. They are garnished and enhanced by the orange spiral (orange peel). The four elements are fused together in an energetic cluster yet at the same time each individual characteristic is distinctive and is easily singled out while enjoying a Negroni.
This painting was entered in a local art competition and since it was planned to be exhibited at the Malta Fashion Awards it sparked off the idea of using a very core element of fashion week, that is, fabric. The lush, elegant, smooth textures of satin and organza reminded me of the smooth flow of each drink being poured while making a Negroni. The combination of all the elements together finally present us with something bold, strong and complex yet at the same time classy, soothing and simple.

Blue Dusk is a semi-abstract meditation on the prickly pear cactus, bathed in the quiet blues of evening. Through this dreamlike palette, the familiar form becomes a study of stillness and resilience rooted in the Maltese landscape.
The prickly pear (il-bajtra tax-xewk) is an intrinsic part of Malta's rural identity, associated with traditional Maltese stone walls. Beyond its iconic fruit, the plant is a symbol of endurance, historically used for its medicinal properties and as a natural boundary. In this work, it represents a silent, enduring presence within the hush of the countryside.

Giants captures the agave plant at the height of summer, its leaves rising in strong sculptural lines. Painted in acrylic, the work reflects the quiet presence of the plant, conveying both strength and a restrained sense of grandeur.
In Malta, the agave (is-sabbar tal-Amerika) is a naturalised icon often found along cliff-edges. Its fibers were historically used for rope-making, and the plant remains a striking symbol of resilience, thriving in the island's extreme heat and rocky soil.

In the Thick of It moves inward into dense shade where tall reeds fill the frame and light begins to recede. Painted in darker acrylic tones, the composition creates a sense of immersion suggesting a quiet enclosed space where the outside world falls away.
Common reeds (il-qasba l-kbira) often form dense thickets in Maltese wetlands and valleys. Historically used for everything from musical instruments to traditional construction, these reeds create natural barriers and sheltered habitats. In this work, the species represent a hidden sanctuary within the local landscape.

Built by the Knights Fort St. Angelo lies at the tip of Birgu, one of the Three Cities. Mark Schembri produced this painting for Allura’s Artist Secrets video series, to illustrate the episode’s main theme: artistic license. Watch the episode on Youtube. Mark has been interested in local history since his childhood. When he moved to Floriana he had the privilege to admire Fort St Angelo every day. He likes to observe the various nuances that the weather leaves on the bastions throughout the seasons, together with the lighting changes during the day. All this is assimilated into his creativity when he is in the process of painting. Spontaneity in his art is fundamental for the artist and influences the choice as to which media and techniques he uses in the creation of artwork. The festive outcome mirrors his mood at the time of painting.

Il-Wileg, Qala presents a vivid, textured landscape where the village of Qala rises above layered agricultural fields. The contrast between the sunlit village, the cool-toned escarpment beneath, and the sweeping cultivated land suggests a deep connection between human settlement and the surrounding terrain, a recurring theme in Saliba’s work.
