In the Thick of It moves inward into dense shade where tall reeds fill the frame and light begins to recede. Painted in darker acrylic tones, the composition creates a sense of immersion suggesting a quiet enclosed space where the outside world falls away.
Common reeds (il-qasba l-kbira) often form dense thickets in Maltese wetlands and valleys. Historically used for everything from musical instruments to traditional construction, these reeds create natural barriers and sheltered habitats. In this work, the species represents a hidden sanctuary within the local landscape.
