Big Fig by Lisa Cassar
Big Fig by Lisa Cassar is a vibrant celebration of this well-known Mediterranean character, with bold forms and expressive brushwork capturing the distinctive forms of the fig leaves.
A symbol of growth, resilience and fertility, the fig tree (siġra tat-tin) is also valued for its generous shade and abundant fruit.
Fading by Lisa Cassar
Painted en plein air in the gardens of the British High Commissioner's residence in Malta, Fading is a harmonious interplay of blues and burnt sienna. The work captures a tranquil corner of lush, abundant growth, evoking a quiet moment where light, colour and nature gently converge.
The Thick of It by Lisa Cassar
The Thick of It invites us inward into dense shade where tall reeds fill the frame and light recedes. The composition is immersive, mysterious and dark.
Common reeds (il-qasba l-kbira) often form dense thickets in Maltese wetlands and valleys. Historically used for everything from musical instruments to traditional construction, these reeds create natural barriers and sheltered habitats. In this work, the species represent a hidden and protective sanctuary.
Under the Carob by Lisa Cassar
Under the Carob is a warm depiction of the carob tree, where dark, ripening pods contrast with the soothing green hues of the foliage. The interplay of colour and form invites the viewer to pause and rest beneath the tree’s generous canopy, evoking a sense of shelter and calm.
