Aperitivo at Piazza Regina

Capturing street life

Aperitivo at Piazza Reginaby Steve Sciberras captures the warmth of a sunlit square in Valletta, where café tables, drifting umbrellas and quiet conversation shape the rhythm of the afternoon. Loose brushstrokes and luminous colour capture the bustling but fleeting charm of everyday café life in Malta’s capital city.

Dusk over Mdina by Christopher Saliba

Malta’s architectural majesty

Dusk over Mdina by Christopher Saliba depicts the monumental architectural forms and enduring presence of Mdina, Malta’s ancient fortified city, rising in quiet solitude against a firey sunset. The city appears as if sculpted from the land itself, evoking mystery and majesty, and reflecting the artist’s deep affinity for Malta’s landscape and cultural identity.

Il-Wileg, Qala by Christopher Saliba

Il-Wileg, Qala also by Christopher Saliba, presents a vivid, textured landscape where the village of Qala rises above layered agricultural fields. The contrast between the sunlit village, the cool-toned escarpment beneath, and the sweeping cultivated land suggests a deep connection between human settlement and the surrounding terrain, a recurring theme in Saliba’s work.

Breathe Easy

The beauty of natural heritage

Breathe Easy by Lisa Cassar invites the viewer to rest beneath the dense canopy of a fig tree where shade is created and the air feels cooler.

The fig tree (is-sigra tat-tin) is a classic feature of Maltese gardens and countryside. Its broad leaves offer a natural sanctuary from the Mediterranean sun. In this piece, the fig represents a quiet refuge and the simple act of finding space to breathe.

Lisa Cassar with Breathe Easy

Tangled by Lisa Cassar

Tangled by Lisa Cassar is an angular, close-up study of the agave plant, its earthy tones and heavy, interlocking shapes convey the plant’s powerful presence during the intense Maltese summer.

The agave (is-sabar tal-Amerika) is a common sight in Malta along traditional rubble walls. Known for its resilience, architectural forms and the inter-weaving of it leaves.

Can You Hear It? by Lisa Cassar

Can You Hear it? is a vivid, up-close study of giant reeds set against a clear blue sky, its vibrant greens and crisp contrasts capture the vitality and movement of the plant as it rises distinctively across the Maltese landscape.

In Malta, giant reeds are known locally as il-qasab and are easily spotted in rural valleys and field edges due to their density and height. This work highlights their vertical rhythm and the interplay between their dense greens and the openness of the sky behind.

Awakening by Rosette Bonello

Expressing what’s inside

Informal artist Rosette Bonello creates intuitive and emotional paintings, which represent and express her inner experiences. Awakening unfolds with a warm glow at its centre, as if something is quietly coming into being. Colour and light breathe together in gentle harmony and evoke a sense of quiet emergence.

Echoes in Green 1 by Rosette Bonello

Part of a diptych Echoes in Green 1 features soft veils of green which drift like fragile memories, holding a quiet sense of longing, both distant and intimate. Subtle hints of gold emerge like traces of hope, gently rising through a calm, reflective stillness.
