Have you ever wondered how they do it?

Allura is pleased to announce a second edition of our open art studio series, Artist Secrets. We invite you for a rare and exclusive look behind the scenes with some of Malta’s most prominent contemporary artists, as they reveal the materials and techniques they use to create their work.

The episodes begin with a chat between the artist and host Laura Swale, to introduce the artist, their tools and chosen media. We then follow the making of a new and previously unseen piece of original art as its creator brings it to life. Series two covers painting media such as acrylics, watercolour, oil, water-based oil and gouache, and techniques including glazing, impasto, wet-on-wet, collage and image transfer.

Who are the artists featured in series two?

Allura is all about sharing knowledge and encouraging artistic growth. Since its inception, we have collaborated closely with the Sovereign Art Foundation on the Sovereign Student Art Prize for Malta and Gozo. A special episode in series two is dedicated to gifted local art student, Ylenia Schembri, two-time winner of the prize. In her episode, Ylenia demonstrates painting techniques with water-based oils to create a portrait.

A big thank you to the artists

We would like to thank each one of the nine artists who took part in this latest series. Not only did they generously agree to share their process, they also managed to produce new artwork on camera within a very short window of time. We are grateful for their professionalism and good humour under pressure.
