How do artists paint convincing surfaces?

Allura is pleased to publish the first episode in the second series of Artist Secrets.

Episode one - Acrylic Textures begins with a conversation between Maltese artist Bob Cardona and host Laura Swale, in which Bob talks about his artistic style, subject-matter and choice of painting media.

This is followed by a painting demonstration in which the Gozo-based artist shares his tips and tricks for achieving a variety of surface textures using acrylic paints, as he applies them to the rendering of sky, water, metal and rock.

Bob typically paints in a realistic manner, but interprets his subjects in a vivid and painterly way. In this particular piece, Bob uses both opaque and transparent applications of acrylic paints, using a range of techniques, including drybrush, washes and layering. Bob uses Van Gogh acrylic paints by Royal Talens.

In the eight upcoming episodes, series two will also cover watercolour, oil, water-based oil and gouache, and techniques including glazing, impasto, wet-on-wet, collage and image transfer.

SPOILER ALERT!

The result of the painting session in episode one is a nostalgic coastal scene in Bob’s vibrant signature style. His piece Swim Ladder is currently available in the Bob Cardona collection of Allura Art. However, if you don’t want to spoil the big reveal, we suggest that you first watch it being painted in Bob’s episode.
