Fluid art - the art of flow

The seventh episode in series two of Artist Secrets is now out.

Episode 7 - Acrylic Pouring features Maltese painter Jo Dounis, an up-and-coming local artist known for her ever-evolving portfolio of abstract and semi-abstract works.

Jo talks to host Laura Swale about creative inspiration, artistic styles and the practicalities of making art. The conversation is followed by a demonstration of some of the techniques Jo typically uses in her fluid art pieces.

What is fluid art?

Fluid art is a term used to describe artwork created using paints which contain more liquid than traditional acrylics, or techniques which use special fluid mediums or extra water, to allow the paint to flow more easily.

Read our blog post on fluid art to find out more.

For her fluid art demonstration, Jo uses liquid acrylic paints in a diluted form. Her paint ‘recipes’ are a combination of Amsterdam acrylic paints, pouring medium and water.

In other episodes, series two also covers other painting media, such as watercolour, oil, water-based oils and gouache, and techniques including impasto, glazing, wet-on-wet, collage and image-transfer.

The piece produced in episode seven is called Spring Has Sprung. It is intricate, organic and ethereal, and sits beautifully alongside the other paintings in Jo’s fluid art series.

SPOILER ALERT!

Spring Has Sprung is currently available in the Jo Dounis collection of Allura Art. However, if you don’t want to spoil the surprise, why not first watch it being painted in Jo’s episode.
