Playful experiments with mixed media

The sixth episode in series two of Artist Secrets is now out.

Episode 6 - Mixed Media features American artist Marianne Ogden, explaining and demonstrating the various techniques she uses in her mixed media artworks.

Host Laura Swale joins art teacher Marianne to talk about her painting media, composing images and the fun to be had making art.

What is mixed media?

For those unfamiliar with the term, ‘mixed media’ refers to artwork created using a mixture of media and materials. In this case Marianne combines paper collage materials with different types of paint.

Marianne also uses materials such as craft papers and magazine clippings for collage and photo transfer techniques.

Gel medium can be used both as glue for collage as well as for photo transfer

In other episodes, series two also covers other painting media, such as acrylic, oil and gouache, and techniques including impasto, pouring, glazing and wet-on-wet.

In terms of its style, the painting produced in episode six is typical of Marianne’s distinctive work - a delicate fusion of collage and hand-painting in bold graphic vignettes.

SPOILER ALERT!

Door to Your Dreams is currently available in the Marianne Ogden collection of Allura Art. However, if you don’t want to spoil the big reveal, why not first watch it being painted in Marianne’s episode.

A big thank you to Marianne Ogden

Marianne is a highly experienced and recognised artist, having previously specialised in portraiture before moving on to mixed media. She has also enjoyed a long career teaching art, both in the USA and in Malta.

We would like to express our thanks to Marianne for taking part in Artist Secrets and for so willingly and articulately sharing her expertise. It’s clear that besides being a gifted artist, Marianne is a natural teacher and communicator.

We would also like to thank Marianne for her warmth and generosity, both in terms of the wealth of knowledge she shared during the shoot, and for being so amenable and good-humoured.
