Paintings alive with energy and movement

The eighth episode in series two of Artist Secrets is out.

Episode 8 - Impasto features Bulgarian painter Vania Goshe, a well-established local artist known for her exuberant, impressionistic oil paintings.

Vania talks to host Laura Swale about her diverse subject-matter and what inspires her to paint. The conversation is followed by a painting session during which Vania paints a new original landscape with oil paint and a palette knife.

What is impasto?

Vania uses a technique called impasto.

According to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) the definition of impasto is “a painting technique wherein paint is thickly laid on a surface, so that brushstrokes or palette knife marks are visible.”

Vania explains that using a palette knife rather than a paintbrush gives her more control over the paint and helps her build texture and movement into her work.

Vania prefers oil paints to acrylics due to their thickness. She uses Rembrandt oil paints .

In other episodes, series two also covers other painting media, such as watercolour, acrylic, water-based oils and gouache, and techniques including pouring, glazing and wet-on-wet.

The piece produced in episode eight is called Celebrations in Mdina, and is typical of Vania’s vibrant, painterly style.

SPOILER ALERT!

Celebrations in Mdina is currently available in the Vania Goshe collection of Allura Art, but if you don’t want to spoil the surprise, why not first watch it being painted in Vania’s episode.

A big thank you to Vania Goshe

Vania uses brilliant colours and mark-making techniques to inject her scenes with a sense of effervescence and joy. Vania’s light, bright, recognisable canvases are gaining popularity with an ever-widening audience.

We would like to express our thanks to Vania for taking part in Artist Secrets and for her relaxed and easy-going approach to the shoot. Vania herself is as colourful and uplifting as her art. The passion for art and sunny character of this dedicated painter are plain to see, and rub off warmly on those lucky enough to spend time with her.
