It’s finally happening - save the date!

After several COVID-related postponements, Allura is very pleased to announce that our visual arts event The Trail Valletta will finally go ahead on the weekend of October 30 and 31.

We invite you to meet nine leading local artists at this upcoming open studio event, and chat to them as they work on new paintings at pop-up open art studios at eight different cultural venues in the capital city.

Due to the delays caused by global pandemic and the demands of the current regulations, making the event a reality has been a considerable challenge. But this will only make the event all the more special for everyone involved.

Entry is free of charge but requires registration and COVID-19 regulations apply. For details visit The Trail web-page or The Trail Valletta Facebook event page or register here.

Meanwhile, read on, to find out more…

What is The Trail Valletta?

The Trail Valletta is a weekend walking tour of pop-up open studios, during which you can follow the guide map to eight different venues to discover the creative secrets of some of Malta’s most exciting contemporary painters.

The event is a rare opportunity to meet and chat with local and international fine artists and to see how they make their inspiring work. Visitors can expect an informal and relaxed space, with artists busy painting and completed artwork to photograph, discuss or buy. The original paintings on display will include a range of genres, styles, concepts and techniques.

What is an open studio?

An open studio is an artist’s workplace which is opened up to the public, so that visitors can meet the artist and take a look behind the scenes at how they work. The origins of the open studio lie in the 17th century salons of France and the concept has remained popular ever since, with open studio events now a regular fixture on cultural calendars all over the world. The Trail Valletta will be Allura’s second open studio event, the first of which took place as part of the programme for Valletta 2018 Capital of Culture.

Open studio events are popular all over the world as a way to connect artists with their audiences in a way that is less formal and more relaxed than a gallery and where more meaningful connections can be made as a result.

The Trail Valletta involves hosting temporary ‘pop-up’ studios at public venues, rather than at the artists’ own studios. This means that the artists are situated close enough together for the event to be walkable by visitors in a short period of time.
