Mark Schembri

Mark Schembri's art, like the man himself, is magnetic.

Charisma, candour and curiosity are the hallmarks of this romantic expressionist artist, who approaches the easel with his heart on his sleeve, painting his musings in audacious forms and vivid colour.

Mark’s originality and idiosyncratic style made him an obvious choice for a feature on artistic license and creativity.

Mark Schembri on open studios

The Artist Secrets series is part of Allura’s broader Open Art Studios Programme, designed to bring art-lovers into the studios of artists to share in their process, either in person or through the medium of video.

“I find that the concept of these open art studios is very interesting, because people can delve into the artist’s mind,” says Mark.

“When you’re painting it’s like you’re cooking something.” Mark Schembri

“As I always say, it’s like a recipe,” explains Mark. “Everyone has his own recipe and this concept delves into this ritual of the recipe, the recipe of the artist, of my recipe.”

“I admit that at first I was quite anxious” reveals Mark, “because normally I would be painting alone in my studio. But this time round I was going to be filmed, so that was going to be taxing and different from my safety zone, but it turned out to be a fantastic experience.”

“I’m assuming that people will find all this very interesting. I mean, many viewers watch documentaries on television, programmes about how to do things. On YouTube there are so many tutorials. The ‘how to’ nowadays is very interesting for people because they like to learn new things.”
