Heading Out

Caroline, welcome to Allura Art and thank you for sharing your work with the Allura community. What made you decide to join us?

Allura is a well established, reputable and professional portal for representing artists and promoting their work.

How long have you been an artist?

Since as far back as I can remember. I was drawing avidly as a twelve year old and by the time I was sitting for my O-levels I instinctively became committed to pursuing a career in art.

Patchwork Pastoral #8

What first inspired you to draw and paint?

At a very early age. I think when I was in my early teens, my fascination with film posters compelled me to start drawing faces. My other source of inspiration while at secondary school was the artistic designs of LP covers such as those created by Roger Dean for Yes albums. And yes, I’m showing my age! In fact, it was the ethereal themes of those album covers which inspired the paintings I submitted as part of my application to St. Martins School of Art in London, for which I received an unconditional acceptance.

What motivates you to paint and what does your art mean to you?

Like most artists I suppose it’s an innate drive to capture and interpret the magic of light and colour. In so doing, I am visually expressing myself, both in terms of my emotional experiences and my response to the elements of beauty I perceive in the physical world surrounding me.

How do you choose your subject-matter?

It depends on my mood. The playful aspects of my personality reveal themselves in my paintings of faces as well as in my interpretations of urban landscapes.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

My urge to express myself is compulsive and all-consuming, so I suppose I would describe myself as an obsessively driven creator. I am also drawn to experimentation, to pushing the boundaries of my capabilities.

Urban Landscape #2

How often do you paint?

I am a full-time self employed artist which gives me the freedom to paint as and when I can, which is normally every day. Once I have settled any mundane daily tasks and put on my painting apron, I can easily work for hours, oblivious of passing time. I could be painting for up to eight hours at a stretch. It’s not uncommon for me to down my brushes, take off my apron, glance at the clock and note with bemusement that it’s well past midnight.

What has it taken to reach this point in your career?

Years of dedication. My first taste of success was with my sell-out exhibition of Bedouin portraits at the British Council in Dubai when I was 15. But I actually began my career as a full time artist in my 30s and haven’t stopped since. In retrospect I know I have lived a privileged life, where circumstances have enabled me to escape the constraints of a regular 9 to 5 job and survive on my art career. Needless to say there have been ‘dry’ periods, such as seasonal times of the year, but I have always survived them. I imagine that as I approach my twilight years, my dedication to my art will not dwindle, even though my energy might, and most likely when I am laid to rest I’ll have paint stains on my fingers.

What are your creative aspirations going forward?

To continue to explore new themes and experiment with diverse media. Much the same really, but bigger and better!
