Poppy Fields was created as the artist moved into a textural period, experimenting with painting media to produce textures which are both implied i.e. which give the illusion of texture, and actual, whereby the media is manipulated to create a tactile, three-dimensional surface. Artists use textures for various purposes. It can be a stylistic device or a substitute for natural textures, it can create an impression of rhythm or movement, or it can invoke the viewer's sense of touch by tempting us to physically touch the surface.
