James Vella Clark is a Maltese contemporary artist who masterfully blends vibrant colours, bold brushstrokes and evocative imagery to tell stories and convey emotions. "My landscapes are about storytelling. The stories will never be obvious but only hinted at."

Vella Clark’s artistic journey began with expressionist landscapes inspired by the unique character of Malta's urban and rural scenes. Over time, his style has evolved to embrace a more abstract approach, exploring themes of memory, time and personal expression through bold compositions and a vibrant palette. His imagery is characterised by an expressive use of colour and spontaneous compositions which capture a sense of energy and movement. He primarily works with oil and acrylics, applying thick layers with a brush or palette knife to create texture and depth.

His early landscapes were influenced by Paul Klee and Maltese artists such as Esprit Barthet and Pawl Carbonaro, while his later abstract works show an affinity for movements like Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism. Vella Clark has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Malta and internationally, gaining recognition for his distinctive style and evocative imagery, and his paintings are held in private collections worldwide.
