Catherine Gauci
“Catherine Gauci’s artwork reflects her love of the Gozo landscape where she lives and is inspired by the particular colours of the sea and the rock and the magical quality of the light." Times of Malta
Catherine Gauci is a British-born abstract artist based in Gozo, Malta. Inspired by the island’s landscapes, seascapes and shifting light, her oil paintings capture the essence of nature through layered compositions rich in texture and movement. Using cold wax and oils, she creates atmospheric works which evoke an emotional and intuitive response.
Her artistic journey began early, influenced by her surroundings and family ties to the art world. She studied art, art history and psychology, later earning a diploma in art therapy. Over time, her work evolved toward abstraction, shaped by American Abstract Expressionists and Colour Field painters.
Rather than direct representation, her paintings reflect an emotional connection to nature. Her process is deeply immersive, allowing intuition to guide each composition, resulting in vibrant and expressive pieces which she describes as ‘soulscapes.’ Gauci has exhibited widely, including recent shows at Rudy Buhler Art and the Citadel Cultural Centre in Victoria. Her work has gained recognition both locally and internationally, attracting collectors drawn to its depth and luminosity.
