Mdina View by Steve Sciberras

Mdina View

Mdina View (above) depicts Malta’s former capital city Mdina. It also captures the strong Mediterranean sunlight and contrasting shadows on the foreground reeds and prickly pears.

Steve, welcome to Allura Art and thank you for sharing your work with the Allura community. What made you decide to join us?

I felt privileged to be asked to join this community of fellow artists, and I hope my art will be appreciated on a wider scale.

How long have you been an artist?

For over 20 years I’ve experimented with various mediums, but for the last 10 years I’ve focused mainly on painting.

What first inspired you to draw and paint?

I’m mainly inspired by how light falls onto the subjects I choose to paint.

Bighi by Steve Sciberras

Bighi by Steve Sciberras

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Villa Bighi (above) functioned as the Royal Naval Hospital (RNH Bighi) where casualties of various hostilities were accommodated and nursed. It is situated in the small coastal town of Kalkara where yachts can be seen berthed in the harbour.

What motivates you to paint and what does your art mean to you?

My art is a means of expression which changes according to my mood and surroundings.

How do you choose your subject-matter?

Malta has outstanding scenery and beautiful sunny days. It’s the perfect combination and very inspiring. Although it’s a very small island, Malta is full of historic places and provides beautiful land and seascapes.

Selmun Tower

Selmun Tower (above) is located near Mellieha in northern Malta. It dates back to the 18th century and was inhabited by the Knights of Malta. In Selmun Tower (also known as Selmun Palace) the artist captures this imposing palace as seen in mid summer from Mistra to the south.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

As an artist I use my art to express my love of nature and to encourage others to be more respectful towards our natural environment.

How regularly do you paint?

I try to paint on a daily basis, but it all depends on my muse and my other commitments.

Almond Blossom by Steve Sciberras

Almond Blossom

Almond Blossom was painted in the Chadwick Lakes area of Malta. Stark sunlight throws the vivid colours and verticals of the almond blossom tree into sharp contrast against the long horizontal shadows and dark hues of the background foliage.

At this point you’re a mid-career artist. What does it take for an artist to reach this stage of development?

During my artistic journey I’ve had to make sacrifices, especially at weekends. I’ve had to devote a considerable amount of hours to mastering my painting techniques to get the results I wanted.

Hay Bales by Steve Sciberras

Hay Bales

Hay Bales (above) was painted in the wooded Mizieb area of northern Malta and captures the pink evening sun on the hay bales in the fields.

What are your creative aspirations going forward?

I’ve just set up a new studio in Mosta and I’m really excited to work in it. I’ve begun working towards an exhibition and I’m planning to go abroad to experience new cultures and expand my knowledge of art.
