Andrew Smith

Among the “best contemporary water-based media paintings from around the globe,” Andrew Smith’s Buskett Forest was selected by The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours for its 208th annual exhibition in 2020 at the Mall Galleries in London.

In 2004 British-Maltese artist Andrew Smith moved from Yorkshire to Malta, where he founded IWS Malta, the country branch of the International Watercolour Society, the world’s largest watercolour network.

As the Fabriano Malta leader, he also introduced Malta to the annual Fabriano International Watercolour Festival, which showcases contemporary art from almost 80 countries.

Shifting focus in 2009 to his own artistic practice, Smith became an active member of the Plein Air Painters of Malta. He honed his watercolour technique and built an impressive portfolio of ethereal, evocative landscapes in a traditional, yet timeless style.

Referring to his many years of location painting, often in and around his home town of Birzebbuga in St George's Bay, Smith explains “I developed a keen interest for the interpretation of light and colour.” His dedication to capturing the natural landscape has resulted in beautifully rendered interpretations of the scenery he so loves and admires.

Smith has exhibited in England, Malta, Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy, India, Albania and Pakistan.
