Andrew Borg

“Malta shines bright on the worldwide stage thanks to the caliber of artists who make the Rock their home, Borg being a prime example.” Bob Bahr, Plein Air magazine. “A much-revered artist”, Il-Bizzilla magazine. “A virtuoso”, Sharon Abela, MCAST Creative Arts.

Borg is best-known for landscapes in oils or watercolour capturing the Mediterranean light of his native Malta, a “plein air artist’s paradise.” “We are spoiled for choice... dramatic cliff faces, turquoise-blue sea and magnificent baroque architecture.” He has also painted in Italy and China.

“A unique and striking angle, a sliver of light, an elegant structure or shape,” any might serve to anchor his minimalist compositions. His oeuvre is characterised by “mathematical elegance” and by tension between opposites; abstract and representational, light and shade, textured and smooth, natural and man-made. “I like extremes,” he says, using contrasts to arouse the senses and convey emotion in satisfying views pulsing with light.

Inspired by masters of light Sargent, Sorolla, Zorn and the Impressionists, Borg began painting in 2004, studying classical drawing under Jason Lu, who trained at the Florence Academy of Art. Borg has since exhibited locally and internationally, including with Allura, in Ġebla - Paintings from the Rock and The Big Show.
